We landed in Dublin airport, grabbed
our bags, got on a bus and checked into our hotel in what seemed like
minutes. The hotel is called the Maldron if anyone is curious. Then
of course we went straight to bed. 4 short hours later we woke up. At
that time I had the great pleasure of finding out that I left my
toiletries at home, so we needed to do a little shopping.
The shopping district is very similar
to what we might see in Victoria. Dublin must have really modernized
in the last few years. There is beautiful architecture and statues of
historic artists and revolutionaries alike which is contrasted with
all the McDonalds and Starbucks that you would expect to see at home.
It is an easy way to make even a light walk to pick up a few
forgotten goods a great experience. In fact we loved the feel of the
city so much that we kept walking until we reached a small bar to
have a light meal and of course grab a Guinness.
After listening to the Irish Folk duo
that was playing at the club we still weren't not satisfied with our
outing yet. There was far too much to see, so we looked in our
guidebooks and found a rock n' roll bar that seemed right up our
alley. Although our guidebook did provide a small map to tell us how
to get there, it did not include at least 80% of the street names.
After much navigating (getting lost) and double checking on other
maps we eventually arrived at Bruxelle's. Initially we made the
mistake of sitting outside where we could'nt hear the music and sat
with the smokers. However once we found a booth inside the music
selection was supererb. With bands playing on the stereo such as the
Beatles, Rolling Stones, CCR, and the Commitments, who couldn't like
this pub? A drunken Irishman belting out his favourite song while air
drumming in a way that allowed him to miss every note certainly also
helped make the restaurant a loveable experience. There was also a
quaint little heavy death metal pub just below it if you find
yourself more into that kind of thing.
We didn't get a lot done today, so I
will have more to add on our other days here in Ireland.
Let me just say, I'm having fun down
here already and we have barely even begun. Hopefully we'll get some pictures up here really soon, when I'm less lazy.
